  • Sabres Trade for Linus Omark; Famous Linuses Throughout History

As you no doubt heard by now, the Buffalo Sabres acquired Linus Omark in exchange for a conditional 6th round pick.  I presume the condition amounts to “Just keep doing what you’re doing, Sabres” but you know how legalese can get.  That, combined with the Charlie Brown Christmas show getting played, got me thinking about famous Linuses.

For the NHL, there’s only one other Linus on Hockey-Reference, Linus Klasen, who played all of 4 games with the Preds a few years ago.  The Sabres have a prospect named Linus Ullmark too.  Beyond that, pickings are slim, but there are a few:

Linus2St. Linus, who according to Wikipedia is considered the second Pope.  Nice hair.  My dad had that hair before he decided to buzz it down to Patrick Stewart levels.

L_PaulingLinus Pauling, chemist, peace activist, multiple Nobel Prize winner.  Here he looks like one of the early Doctors from Doctor Who.  The round things!

Linus Torvalds, father of the Linux kernel. The Finnish software engineer was actually named after Linus Pauling.

benjamin-linusBen Linus.  He was LOST, I guess, but now he’s found.

There’s a Linus in Greek myth as well, a son of Apollo and one of the Muses.  Most notable thing about him is Heracles (Hercules to you) beat him to death with his own lyre.  Critics.

That about does it.  Are there any famous Linuses I missed?  Let me know!

  • Woo, I guess

Seems like the Sabres won last night.  They even got some secondary scoring from Gerbe and Stafford.  Huh.  Wish I had seen it.  In the battle of two banged-up teams, the one that hadn’t travelled from Long Island to Chicago to Buffalo for 3 in 4 won.  Amazing.  It would be just like this team to start winning during a stretch where a good portion of people can’t easily see them.

Bright spots would be Stafford (1G 2A), Gerbe (1G 1A) as above, and I’d toss in Brayden McNabb who picked up two assists.  Buffalo is 4 points out of 7th in the East with that win.

By the way, the Edmonton media is a bunch of whiny annoying bitches.  Whether declaring that Kaleta is worse than Matt Cooke, or lamenting a quiet arena on a weekday for an underachieving team with a Western opponent, they all came off as super lame last night.  Cover the game, man.

  • Unwatchable Games

I am stuck with TWC in the short-term, so no more Sabres on TV for me beyond the Versu-er, NBC Sports Network games and the like.  I can’t even fill in my knowledge this month by being pressbox blogger guy as they are away for most of the games, and 2 of the 3 home games are this week.  Ugh.  I have hope for a speedy resolution to this, but I have no illusions that it will be so.  If I have time and the inclination tonight, I may live-tweet what I assume is happening during the game, based on the box score.

  • Mike Weber, Scoring Machine

SOMEONE needed to step up while Tyler Myers is out, and last night it was Mike Weber, who got his first 2 NHL goals and led the Sabres to a 4-2 lead over the Edmonton Oilers.  Weber also had an assist for a 3 point night, while Luke Adam and Jochen Hecht had the other 2 goals.

Buffalo needs to win these games, but they just haven’t consistently.  Secondary scoring happened last night, and honestly you might as well call it primary scoring with Timmy, Roy and Myers out.  The Sabres need to win 4 or 5 of these games for me to think about them managing a playoff berth.  Do you see that happening?

Congratulations, by the way, to Ryan Miller for finally getting win 200.  Despite the team struggling, he’s having a pretty nice few weeks (engaged to a hot actress, etc.).
