    The Vibes are GOOD

Okay, so last night’s game ended GREAT (5-0!) despite getting heavily outshot in the first two periods. Colten Ellis stood on his head, his back, his elbow, and every other part for his first career shutout while the Sabres offense woke up for 4 goals in the third period.

But honestly? WHO CARES IT WAS SO MUCH FUCKING FUN! The crowd was rocking, singing along with songs, chanting at the terrible officiating (some things never change), and booing Columbus whenever possible.

It wasn’t perfect as I felt like Buffalo wasn’t being physical, and had a little bit of their previous passing problem, but they figured it out in the third. Peyton Krebs opened the scoring in the first, and the lights-out play by Ellis kept that as the winner. Josh Doan scored twice, including an amazing individual effort where he stole the puck right off the stick of Charlie Coyle and fired it home. Jack Quinn scores the next one on a 4 on 2 breakaway, and Doan gets his second moments later on a beauty of a feed by Hobbit/Vampire Zach Benson (seriously, look at any picture of him). Dahlin finished things off with a 200 foot empty net goal.

Buffalo now sits at 106 points, tops in the Eastern Conference. They play in Chicago Monday, and the final *regular season* game of the season if Wednesday at home against the Dallas Stars. What a ride the past few months have been.

  • Sabres Hold Off Jackets

Giving up 40+ shots isn’t how you want to win, but a strong performance from Jhonas Enroth allowed the Sabres to do just that last night.  Vanek/Adam/Pominville continue to dominate, with Pommers scoring twice, Vanek assisting on 3, and Brad Boyes scoring again.  There were penalties and giveaways, guys named Cody fighting, and a Kaleta goal celebration.  It was the sort of game where you are happy you won but you still work the team twice as hard so they don’t get it in their heads that this was okay.  Still, it was entertaining as hell to watch.  Two of the goals came on the powerplay, which looked to have better puck and player movement.  That’s one thing they don’t have to forget, at least.

The Sabres will be back at it tomorrow night against the Panthers, and I might be in the pressbox for that one.

  • Gameday 2011-2012 – Blue Jackets at Sabres

The Columbus Blue Jackets come in for a visit tonight at the First Niagara Center, coming off their first win of the season.  It was the first game back for James Wisniewski after his long suspension from the Shan-hammer.  The Sabres, of course, are still looking for their first win at the FNC, but they should have a decent chance to get one tonight or Saturday against the Panthers.  For all the Miller talk in the Yahoo game preview, Jhonas Enroth gets this game.  A good place to get him in, and a good sign that Lindy is going to actually play him 25 games as it’s NOT a back to back situation.

7pm start.  Time to get on a roll.

  • One

The number you need to know is one.  One point seperates the Buffalo Sabres from the playoffs.  They can get the point themselves, either tonight or tomorrow night, or the Hurricanes or Rangers can hand it to them by losing, even in OT or the shootout.

Of course, the much more satisfying way to do things is for the Sabres to take care of their own business and win out.  Philly (tonight’s opponent) hasn’t exactly been instilling confidence in their fans, and they had a closed-door chew-out session with their GM.  Columbus (tomorrow’s opponent) is in a tailspin of epic proportions, having only 3 wins since the beginning of March.  They will also be operating on short rest as they play Nashville tonight.  Things are stacked in the Sabres’ favor.

Let’s see them accelerate into the playoffs.  Bust down the door against Philly, and roll that momentum forward.

  • Goose-Eggs

I was going to create a photoshop involving Gaustad and laying eggs, but I think you all will fill in the visual much better than I could.

Back to back genuine shut-outs for Ryan Miller, that dude is back.  He didn’t have to do much against Columbus who lost their focus pretty early, but Miller was great in out-dueling Brian Elliott in shutting out the Senators.  They’ll need this tomorrow and the rest of the week as well, as a visit to Boston is followed by home games against San Jose and Pittsburgh.

This note also of interest from Bruce “Malkin to the Kings” Garrioch:

The Sabres are looking to move veteran D Craig Rivet. He has been a healthy scratch six times this season and is the club’s captain. Making $3.5 million, Rivet is going to be a tough sell.

It makes sense, but like Bruce says, not many teams need a $3.5 million defenseman who isn’t cracking the roster on the (current) 11th team in the East.
