  • Sorry, Ville

Seriously, can this guy catch a break?  Er, bad choice of words.  The view from the press box probably isn’t helping him any, as his team struggles to find an identity (and their man in the defensive zone) managing only 1 point in the standings in four games.  Goaltending has been a bright spot, though they worked Miller so hard his groin kept him out of a game.  Jhonas Enroth ably filled in, but eventually, your team might have to chip in a goal or three.

I wish I could say things are going to get better soon, but really, a team filled with teenagers, head cases and only one real scoring threat is not one that shakes off a slump easily.  All the line-juggling and benchings in the world won’t help.  Time, practice and teaching will.  That can’t happen if a player is in a suit.  Neither can it happen if he’s toiling on the fourth line alongside John Scott or Cody McCormick.  Mistakes suck, and they are hard to watch.  I get that.  But they need to be made if they are to be learned from.  Or, pessimistically, we need to see if a player CAN learn from them.  So give me Grigorenko and Larsson, Girgensons and Ristolainen.  Foligno, Pysyk, Hodgson – let’s see what we have.  If we’re going to suffer, let’s suffer with a purpose.

    Today’s lines at practice:

    • Vanek – Hodgson – Ott
    • Foligno – Ennis – Stafford
    • Girgensons – Larsson – Flynn
    • McCormick – Porter – Kaleta

    On D:

    • Ehrhoff – Pysyk
    • Weber – Myers
    • McBain – Ristolainen

This is a problem.  Yeah, Grigorenko hasn’t been great.  But he’s not some 5 year veteran who needs to be shaken up by having to sit a few games.  He’s a KID whose best chance is to work on his game NOW.

  • Sabres Sign Pysyk

Multiple reports have the Sabres signing 2010 1st rounder Mark Pysyk to his entry level contract, though he is most likely going to return to juniors next season for a fourth season.  Sabres Prospects has the rundown including Mark’s recent stats.  He captained the team, and seems likely to be on Canada’s next World Junior Championships team.

Pysyk is active on Twitter, mostly chirping his Edmonton Oil Kings teammates, and creeping on Taylor Swift.  Were he to make the team next year (an outside shot, he can do the 9 game tryout if he really impresses at camp), he might just be the first Sabres tweeter since Drew Stafford.  That we know of, anyway.

  • Sabres Draft Day Results

The Sabres 2010 draft class is complete, which if you need to refer to it, can be found here.  Speaking as someone who is just reading up on these guys now, after the fact, I like it.  It sounded like the Sabres missed out on who they really wanted at 23 (Riley Sheahan who went to the Wings at 21), but got a very solid defensive D-man in Mark Pysyk.  The rest of the class shows the Sabres’ plan – get bigger (as noted below), and go North American.

The other (more exciting) side of the coin is trades, of which there were few.  The ‘core’ is still here, it’s true, but there’s still plenty of time to make changes.  Trades and free agent signings can still happen, so judgement is reserved on that front.

By the way, if you played along with my previous post, here are your answers:

    1. Under.  Zero Tylers (the big pick named Tyler came off the board right away, anyway).
    2. Under.  Zero Euros.  Not surprising considering the past two years, but I’m shocked there wasn’t even one that was tempting enough to go for.
    3. Under.  The Ballard deal is the only one worth noting.
    4. Over.  Calling this over, two 6’2″ guys, one 6’4″ and one 6’5″.
    5. Didn’t get to watch the whole thing, unfortunately, but I’m assuming over.  I know from Twitter he was shown at least once.
