  • Girgensons Back For Another Year

The Buffalo Sabres announced yesterday they have signed Zemgus Girgensons to a one-year deal.

The Sabres didn’t announce it, but it’s apparently worth $1.15 million this year.  I’m happy to see him back, hopefully he can get back to the 15 goal mark again.  I can definitely see Gears filling that Jochen Hecht role of just being a generally all-around good player that can be relied upon anywhere in the lineup.  He’s still an RFA too, so there’s not a huge downside to giving the one-year deal in hopes that he plays his way into a long-term deal.

  • Sabres, Tyler Myers Agree to Terms on a 7 Year Deal

From a Sabres.com tweet.  No financial data out there yet.  WOO!

edit:  7 years, $38.5million.  $12mil in first year (10 in bonus, 2 in salary).

  • Myers Close to an Extension

Hey, more awesome Sabres news!  According to the venerable Bob McKenzie over at TSN, Tyler Myers (along with the Islanders’ John Tavares) is very close to signing a 6 yr contract extension, worth around $5.5mil per year.  If true (and if there’s anyone out there I’d trust for this, It’s Bob McKenzie) that’s a great number for Myers and the Sabres, and it clears out one potential bit of drama for next offseason.  I for one certainly don’t want to have any Stamkos-esque “hey what if we sign Myers to a huge offersheet?  I’ll hang up and listen” garbage from other fanbases.  Tyler has quickly become one of the faces of the team along with Ryan Miller, and is a key component in making and keeping this team a Cup contender.  I may seem like a broken record saying this, but I can’t wait for the season to start!

  • GERBE!

As you all know, Nathan Gerbe is signed, 3 years, $4.3 million.  Great number for a guy who lit it up in the second half of last year and played well in the playoffs.  This dodges one potential RFA offer sheet target (not that it was all that likely) and keeps the honey badger in the fold.  Can’t wait to see his performance in the upcoming year.  Lot’s of room left to make moves.  So exciting right now.

  • Sabres Sign Pysyk

Multiple reports have the Sabres signing 2010 1st rounder Mark Pysyk to his entry level contract, though he is most likely going to return to juniors next season for a fourth season.  Sabres Prospects has the rundown including Mark’s recent stats.  He captained the team, and seems likely to be on Canada’s next World Junior Championships team.

Pysyk is active on Twitter, mostly chirping his Edmonton Oil Kings teammates, and creeping on Taylor Swift.  Were he to make the team next year (an outside shot, he can do the 9 game tryout if he really impresses at camp), he might just be the first Sabres tweeter since Drew Stafford.  That we know of, anyway.

  • Sabres Sign Foligno

Marcus Foligno, that is.  Combine Foligno with Kassian and an increased role from Weber (and a few others on the roster now), and this is a Sabres team that is getting tough in the next few years.

Foligno posted career highs in goals (23), assists (36) and points (59) for Sudbury of the Ontario Hockey League. The league’s coaches also named him the best body checker in the Eastern Conference.

Best body checker?  I’ll take that.  Buffalo has some strong, talented players in the pipeline, and think I might love how this team looks and plays in a couple of years.  This year too, maybe, depending on how the offseason goes.  Let’s make some moves!

  • Matt Ellis? Yeah, Sure, Why Not…

The Sabres re-signed Matt Ellis yesterday, and according to Capgeek.com it’s a two-way deal.  It’s a one-year deal, $625,000 while in the NHL and just over 100k while in the AHL.  Not a bad example for the kids in Portland, as he works hard every night despite not being the most skilled guy in the league.  The move gives Buffalo a trusted forward to call up in case of injury.  They shouldn’t ask much more than that of him.

  • Get to know Shaone Morrisonn

I only had to check the spelling once for the title, but as stated, Shaone (pronounced like Shawn) Morrisonn was signed by Buffalo to a 2 year deal.  Financials not confirmed, rumored to be around $1.75mil/year but huge grains of salt there.  He’s 27, having played the last several years with Washington, at times paired with Mike Green.  1G, 11A last year, he is more of a stay-at-home guy that clears out the front of the net (6’4″, 210 lbs).  He had 163 hits last year, which would’ve put him first on the Sabres ahead of Kaleta.  His 104 blocked shots last season would put him second to Tyler Myers.

    Other notes on Morrisonn:

Really, with all of this, he reminds of Jay McKee.  Big, similar numbers, shot blocker, hard hitter, all around tough guy.  Not a big splashy move, but definitely a guy that can play a role on this team now.

  • Kaleta Under Contract

I had a really long, alliterative title thought up for this but I’ll spare you.  What’s important is Patrick Kaleta is back with the Sabres for 2 more years, at the very reasonable price of $1.815 million over those years.  When most folks were expecting $1.3 million +, that’s a deal.

Darcy’s arbitration play worked like a charm, and Kaleta is thrilled to be back.  It’s a win-win, for once, for the Sabres.  Patty needs to stay healthier, if he does, he might up his goal total to the 15 goal range, which for what he plays a night is a huge contribution, along with the insane number of penalties he draws.  By the way, if you want to have some fun, check out the comments about Kaleta at TSN or some of the other national news outlets, you really get a sense of how hated (and as such, feared) he is.

  • Tim Conboy

You know, I was listening to WGR on the way in to work today, and I was momentarily floored…were they really asking about our favorite Tim Connolly memory? Did we find a sucker to trade for him? But no, it was Tim Conboy, most famous (to us at any rate) for letting a 5’5″ player goad him into attacking from behind.  Anyway, Conboy is on a two-way contract so will stay in Portland unless there is a rash of injuries.  Would be interesting to see how interactions between him and Gerbe would go.
